Project Plans

The Growing the Future @ Ashlyns (GtFA) is a multi stage project with planning for 6 years so far. The area will represent a self sustainable allotment and conservation area which will be managed and maintained through a collaboration of volunteers and and student skill projects.

Current final year plan as of January 2010

The project ties in with plans of offer a horticultural course, open to both school students and members of the public during the 2010-2011 school year, as well as current offered courses of Environmental Science and some areas of the Science GCSE.

Within the allotment area, there will be growing a variety of fruit trees, such as apples and pears. We also have had donated a large selection of canes, bushes, strawberry runners and a huge rhubarb crown. Local nusuries and seed companies have been very generous in donating seeds, pots and tools. This all means that the garden will be able to produce a large variety of produce that can be distributed among the students and volunteers.

The conservation area will aim to encourage local wildlife and insects to take up residence within an area which will be selectively managed. The idea being that such an area can be intensely monitored and recorded by students for course work projects where visiting off site conservation areas over a long period of time may not be logistically possible.
